To see people closer to you, you will need to adjust your search filter parameter. 

You do this by going to the Swipey screen and tapping the purple funnel icon. Scroll down and adjust the distance slider.

Alternatively, you may adjust your search by specific regions or country by going to the country filters on the bottom most part of the search filter page.
